“THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST”

Workshop performances in San Francisco and Los Angeles (Location, Date, and Time to be determined)

CultureWorks is proud to present “THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST”. Like unexpectedly taking 20 hits of acid, witnessing firsthand the events of 9/11 created a massive transformative reality. In this solo performance, a satin setting is created to lassoe absurd, scattered, and raw energy and transform it into a visceral world of potential beauty.

Led by Brian, who began developing this evening-length work in Brooklyn, New York just days after the bombings, this ritualistically-structured performance strings together several vignettes, consisting of dance, storytelling, and theater, that reflect the energies, reactions, and sensations associated with transformative environments. The vignettes prepare the audience for a final ritualistic moment, in which audience members collaborate with Brian to assemble a temporary space of beauty, reflection, and momentary transcendence.

Inspired in part by the overwhelmingly unimaginative and destructive responses to the events of 9/11, “THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST” reflects CultureWorks’ mission, which is to utilize performance as a means to creatively demonstrate how culture influences human perception and consciousness, and how different culturally formed perceptions of similar phenomenon can lead to misunderstanding, conflict, and violence. The hope is that by being aware of this process, empathy can be achieved, perhaps leading to a more understanding and compassionate populace.

A workshop/work-in-process performance of this evening length work will take place in San Francisco in late July, prior to the world premiere in New York in August.

Date, time, and location of the San Francisco and Los Angeles performances are currently being arranged. An update will be sent soon.

Final Note

Brian Shapiro/CultureWorks is currently seeking contributions to help with the cost of brining “The Sun Rises in the East” to New York and other locations. Please keep in mind, CultureWorks’ mission is to utilize performance as a means to creatively demonstrate how culture influences human perception and consciousness, and how different culturally formed perceptions of similar phenomenon can lead to misunderstanding, conflict, and violence.

Essentially, Brian Shapiro/CultureWorks explores and examines the epistemological components of human existence. Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that examines human knowledge, more specifically; how we as human beings come to know what it is we do know. The hope is that by becoming aware of this knowledge attaining process, we can begin to comprehend how it is two individuals of differing backgrounds can have very different experiences and understandings of a seemingly similar event. The ultimate goal is to assist individuals in developing empathy for others, perhaps leading to a more understanding and compassionate populace. “The Sun Rises in the East”, is a seminal work for bringing this message of self-awareness and understanding to audiences nationwide.

Contributions, although not yet tax-deductible, will enable Brian Shapiro/CultureWorks to bring this essential and valuable work to New York this summer. Any contributed amount, however small, will help. All donors will be recognized in the program notes of each performance. Please make checks or money orders payable to:
